The Two Systems, Briefly
Almost every overhead garage door is counterbalanced by springs, because the door is far heavier than a motor could reasonably lift. A torsion system uses one or more springs wound around a steel shaft above the opening; the springs wind up as the door lowers and give that energy back as it rises. An extension system instead runs long springs along the horizontal tracks on either side, stretching as the door closes.
Both do the same job by different means. The opener is only there to start and guide a door that is already balanced, so when people blame the opener for a door that will not lift, the counterbalance is usually what actually failed.
Why the Match Matters More Than the Type
What matters about a replacement spring is not which family it belongs to but whether it is rated for your door. Springs are specified by wire size, inside diameter, length and cycle life, all chosen for the finished weight and travel of one particular door. Two coils that look identical on a shelf can behave very differently on a shaft.
That is why a technician measures rather than guesses. An insulated double door with glass sections weighs far more than the bare steel door that hung in the same opening years earlier, and an out-of-balance door quietly wears the opener, rollers and cables all at once.
Converting From Extension to Torsion
Owners of older garages are sometimes offered a conversion from extension springs to a torsion shaft. It can be a genuine improvement: a torsion system keeps the counterbalance on one shaft, tends to run more smoothly, and avoids stretched springs alongside the tracks. But it is an installation decision, not an automatic upgrade.
The garage needs the headroom for a shaft and the structure to mount it. If those exist and the hardware is tired anyway, a conversion may be worth pricing. If not, the money is better spent on a correctly specified extension system with safety containment cables fitted. Ask what the conversion solves at your garage, and what a straight repair would cost instead.
Signs a Spring Has Failed
The classic sign is sound: a single loud bang from the garage, often at night when the temperature drops and the metal contracts. Afterwards the door will not lift, or the opener strains, rises a few inches and stops. On a torsion system you may be able to see a clear gap in a coil on the shaft. On an extension system a spring may simply be hanging slack.
There is a second, quieter version of the same problem. A door that has become noticeably harder to lift by hand, that drops the last stretch instead of settling gently, or that will not stay put halfway is telling you the counterbalance is weakening. That is worth acting on before it fails outright and leaves a vehicle shut in.
How Long Springs Last
Spring life is measured in cycles, not years, where one cycle is a full open and close. A household using the garage as its main entrance can run through several thousand cycles a year, so the same spring lasts a fraction as long there as on a door opened twice a week.
If your door is heavily used, ask about higher-cycle springs at replacement time. Ask for the specification and the written warranty terms either way, and keep the paperwork so the next inspection knows what is fitted.
What You Can Safely Check
Plenty can be observed from a safe distance. Note whether the door is open, closed or stopped partway, whether you heard a bang, and whether the motor still runs. Look along the shaft from the doorway, without climbing beside it, and see whether a coil is visibly separated.
What you should not do is release spring tension, adjust winding cones, or pull the emergency release while the door is raised. Loaded springs hold a great deal of energy and release it fast, which is why this is one of the few household repairs that genuinely warrants a trained technician and the right winding bars.
